ALCOHOL IS IT WRONG OR RIGHT

ALCOHOL USE IS IT WRONG OR RIGHT?

The numbers in the article are from the Strongs concordance; if you would like to look these references up for yourself.

First of all let’s see what the Bible has to say about it.  I hear so many say that Jesus turned the water into wine so it has to be ok.  But did he really turn the water into fermented wine?  Or could the wine that Jesus made been grape juice, the fruit of the vine?  Let’s just look at the Scripture and see what it has to say about it.

II Timothy 2:4 No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.

Our greatest goal is to please him who hath chosen us, it is not to see how much we can get by with and still make it in. If we dull our mind with alcohol then we sometimes fail to see other things that we are failing in as well; which is exactly what Satan wants us to do.

Matthew 5:13-16 Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? It is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.

 14: Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid.

 15: Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.

 16: Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

When salt has been mixed with other food it takes on the flavor of what ever it is mixed with. So we, when we mix with the world we start taking on their characteristics, and soon you can’t tell the difference.  We should stand out like a light on a candle stick in a dark house.

1 Peter 5:5-8 Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.

 6: Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:

 7: Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

 8: Be sober, (3525; to abstain from wine, keep sober; be discreet) be vigilant; (1127  to keep awake; watch) because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:

1 Thessalonians 5:5-8 (King James Version)

Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.

6: Therefore let us not sleep, as do others but let us watch and be sober (3525; to abstain from wine, keep sober; be discreet).

7: For they that sleep, sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night.

8: But let us, who are of the day be sober (3525; to abstain from wine, keep sober; be discreet), putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation.

1 Timothy 3:2 (King James Version)

A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant (3524 but from 3525; to abstain from wine, keep sober; be discreet), sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach;

2 Ti 4:5  But  watch (3525; to abstain from wine, keep sober; be discreet) thou in  all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof  of thy  ministry.

1Pe 1:13 Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober (3525; to abstain from wine, keep sober; be discreet), and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought  unto you at  the revelation of Jesus Christ;

1Pe 4:7 But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch (3525; to abstain from wine, keep sober; be discreet) unto prayer.

1Pe 5:8 Be sober (3525; to abstain from wine, keep sober; be discreet), be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:

All of the above verses plainly tell us to abstain from alcohol. I do not believe that Jesus would have made something that we were plainly told to abstain from.  I believe that what he made was grape juice; He turned the water into grape juice.

Ephesians 5:18  And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess (810 unsavedness); but be filled with the Spirit;

Being filled with the Spirit is a much better high than to drink to calm your nerves and relieve your stress.

Galatians 5:21 "Envyings, murders, DRUNKENNESS, revelings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have told you in time past, that THEY WHICH DO SUCH THINGS SHALL NOT INHERIT THE KlNGDOM OF OOD."

Proverbs23:19-21,"Hear thou, my son and be wise, and guide thine heart in the way. Be not among winebibbers; among riotous eaters of flesh: for the DRUNKARD and the glutton shall come to poverty.”

And even though society tells you that drinking is fun, that people who drink are social and attractive, and that a 1itt1e wine is good for your health, the Bible tells us something very Different:

Proverbs 20: 1 "Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.”

Hosea 4:11 "Whoredom and wine and new wine take away the heart."

Even Pharaoh preferred grape juice (Gen.40:11) to rotten, decaying alcoholic grape juice.

The unfortunate thing for us in the 21st Century is that early history made little or no written distinction between grape juice (the fruit of the vine) and fermented grape juice containing alcohol which puts the burden of proof upon context and therefore personal opinion.

It is reported in early English the word, "WINE" was used for both the pure blood of the grape undefiled (grape juice) and also for that which has began to decay, rot, and go in the direction of spoilage containing alcohol. In 1380 English the "Wyne" come from the "Vyne". According to Webster's 1828 we see even clearer the connection of the original word "wine" being tied to Italian, Spanish, and Russian "vino", Latin “vinum” we begin to see the connection of VINE (Spanish vina, Latin vinum) to WINE; THEREFORE FRESH SQUEEZED GRAPES WERE SPOKEN AND WRITTEN TO PRODUCE, "WINE", "yayin" Hebrew, "oinos" Greek, all UNFERMENTED); their clear wording for “grape juice" was worded "fruit of the vine" in the New Testament.

We are quickly reminded of I Timothy 5:23 by those that endorse or encourage ALCOHOL use, if only for COMMUNION or medical use. However anyone who has had stomach trouble knows that one thing you stay away from is} ALCOHOL in any form, because it upsets a sensitive stomach. The Medical Profession states that grape juice unfermented is MORE beneficial for stomach aliments than ALCOHOL in grape juice.

I Corinthians 10:23 All things are lawful (1832 right)for me, but all things are not expedient (4851 good): All things are lawful (1832 right) but all things edify (3618 & 3619 build the house) not.

It may seem right in our own eyes but we are supposed to be building a house for God, and all things do not help build the house, some things actually work to destroy and tear it down.

Some effects of alcohol.

             #1. Loss of inhibition and damage to the brain, liver, pancreas, duodenum, and central nervous system.

              #2. Alcohol is a human specified poison!

              #3. It cause metabolic damage to every cell and depresses the immune defense system.

              #4. An "alcoholic" may shorten his life span ten to fifteen years.

               #5. Alcohol is broken down in the liver. The toxic effect of alcohol on the liver is very serious. This may cause hepatitis. The usual fatal final stage is cirrhosis of the liver.

                #6. Prolonged consumption of alcohol inhibits the liver's production of digestive enzymes, impairing the body's ability to absorb proteins and fats. Its ability to absorb vitamins A,D, E, and K is impaired. Many essential nutrients are not retained for use by the body; they are rapidly eliminated through the urinal system.

                 #7. Alcohol affects people differently. Some may become intoxicated from their first drink; others may be able to drink 4 or 5 drinks before showing any effects.

                  #8. Alcoholism is a progressive disease that usually starts with acceptable social drinking. Soon this leads to a drink for every mood.

                    (a) One to calm down.

                     (b) One to perk up.

                    (c) One to celebrate

                    (d) And the list goes on.....One drink starts the craving for another. Now he is complete controlled by his dependence on alcohol,

                   #9. Because the Alcoholic lacks control, be becomes ashamed and angry at his compulsive behaviour, and he harbors his feelings of inadequacy inside. However he begins taking out his pain on those closes to him.

                    #10 If the Alcoholic wishes to regain control of his life, he must avoid all alcohol. Since one sip of alcohol can renew the drinking pattern, total abstinence is the only way that the alcoholic can exercise control over this disease. He must choose not to drink. [End quote nutritional healing guidelines]

                   Note, the one who thinks he can control alcohol is headed down a path of no control and immune disorders of the body

So I would conclude that Jesus did not make alcoholic wine, but rather fresh grape juice for they thought they had saved the best wine to the last.

 Alcohol and Triglycerides

Alcohol has a number of effects on triglyceride levels. Alcohol is a major source of excess calories which get turned into fat, so the triglyceride levels in the blood increase. Alcohol also has been shown to inhibit the burning of fat. A 2003 study conducted in Geneva, Switzerland found that alcohol in the bloodstream can slow down fat metabolism by more than 30%. (Journal of the American Medical Association. July 2003).

It should also be noted that drinkers of alcohol usually consume foods high in sodium and fat while drinking.

When alcohol (ethanol) is present in the blood, the liver prioritizes removing alcohol from the blood over other metabolic processes. The liver can detoxify about one ounce of alcohol (distilled spirits) per hour, which is about 1 serving of an alcoholic beverage (equivalent to 12 ounces of beer or 4 ounces of wine).In the meantime, however, glucose tends to be further processed into triglycerides which raises their blood levels.

Alcohol spurs the liver to make more triglycerides, and even light drinking (two to four ounces of wine a week) can raise triglycerides.
{Diabetes Organization, Feb. 2000, and Tufts University Health & Nutrition Letter, July 1997}.

Alcohol reduces the amount of the enzyme that breaks down triglycerides. It even spurs the liver to make more triglycerides. {Steven Inkles, MD, assistant clinical professor of medicine at UCLA Medical School and physician at Pritikin Longevity Center}

Fatty liver is a condition is which large deposits of triglycerides form in the liver. It may be temporary or permanent. The condition is not harmful in itself, but may indicate a more serious problem. In severe cases, the liver can increase to over three times its normal size and may be painful and tender. The most common cause of fatty liver is alcoholism. The over-consumption of alcohol interferes with the way the liver breaks down and stores fat.

Some research has been done to suggest that drinking red wine can actually help prevent heart disease. Results, however, are not conclusive with some suggesting that it is the overall lifestyle of the participants rather than the drinking of red wine that led to the improvements. If consuming red wine to benefit your heart health, the wine should be made with organic grapes - free of toxic agricultural chemicals, synthetic herbicides, pesticides, fungicides or fertilizers. For example, it may contain little antioxidants and/or no resveratrol (res-VAIR'ah-trol) at all. (Resveratrol is a prostate cancer-fighting compound found in red grapes from which red wine is being made; it also prevents platelets in the blood from sticking together).

It should also be stated that consuming large amounts of red wine or just grapes - which have a much lower concentration of antioxidants than wine - will increase your insulin levels and eventually have a negative impact on your lipid health due to their high fructose (sugar) content.

In addition, a recent study suggested that regular wine drinkers have elevated systolic blood pressure levels. In an attempt to see if the antioxidant chemicals in red wine could offset some of the blood pressure effects of alcohol, researchers compared the effects of red wine on blood pressure with beer. Compared with the men who did not drink any alcohol, the red wine drinkers had a nearly 2.5 point jump in their systolic blood pressure. Beer drinkers' blood pressure rose nearly two points. Heart rate also rose. The researchers tested heart rate during sleep to rule out any effect of activity. Red wine drinkers' heart rate climbed five points for eight to 10 hours after drinking. Beer drinkers' heart rate rose four points.

The researchers conclude that the blood pressure effects of red wine and beer appear to be similar. (Zilkens, R. Hypertension: Journal of the American Heart Association, May 2005; vol 45: pp 1-6.).
